The Vikings were the first to appreciate
the advantages of the small township on the Isle of Skye known today as 'Portnalong'.
At the time the attraction was the safe and sheltered anchorage at the
entrance of Loch Harport.
It was not, however, until the end of
the First World War that a thriving community was established when weaving
/ crofting families from the outer isles of Lewis and Harris were
encouraged to settle the area. |

One of these settlers was Alan MacLeod, a man who
had the vision to build 'Taigh Ailean' (Gaelic for "Alan's
House"), a home and house which, of its period, was
significant both in size and grandeur.
Today, the 'Taigh Ailean Hotel' is a remote and
intimate inn offering a highly personal service for guests who treasure
those quiet moments.

coupled with the fact that there are only five bedrooms, will have you
believing that you are participating in a country house party where
brisk walks are always followed by scrumptious meals and pleasant
conversation (in the Winter by the warm log fire!).

The 'Taigh Ailean Hotel' is a member of the 'Green
Tourism' scheme. Rates vary, but the
en-suite rooms average £25.00 per person per night (winter) and £35.00 per person per night
(summer). All include
a hearty highland breakfast. Reductions are
available for longer stays and seasonal specials.
